Four behind Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland after 54 holes of the 150th Open at St Andrews in 2022, Smith produced a simply stunning closing round of 64 to lift the Claret Jug by one from Cameron Young.

It was the pinnacle of a stunning season in which the Australian also won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January, beating Jon Rahm by one with a 34-under-par total that was a PGA Tour 72-hole record, then captured the $3.6million first prize at the Players Championship, where his closing 66 included 10 birdies.

It all helped him to reach second on the world rankings, having been outside the top 20 entering 2022.

Came joint-fourth on his first-ever major appearance at the 2015 US Open after coming through a qualifying tournament and at the 2020 Masters, Smith tied for second behind Dustin Johnson, in the process becoming the first player to shoot four rounds in the 60s at Augusta National.

Tied for third back at the course in 2022, qualified for a Presidents Cup debut on home turf in December 2019 and is a three-time winner of the Australian PGA title

Following his Open triumph, he joined the LIV Golf circuit.
