Prestwick was designed with an unusual routing, featuring many blind shots and unusual angles to test the unwary golfer. Under the stewardship of Old Tom Morris these playing characteristics were retained when the course was extended to 18 holes. Though Prestwick no longer plays host to The Open, its record of having hosted the Championship is bettered only by St Andrews. Both Old and Young Tom Morris, Willie Park Sr and Harry Vardon won at the Ayrshire venue.
