Turnberry first welcomed The Open in 1977, an event which was to become famous as one of the greatest showcases of golf in the game’s history: the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’. Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson went head-to-head over the final two days, with Watson eventually finishing a shot clear of his rival – and 11 shots ahead of the rest of the field. Another remarkable Open unfolded at the venue in 2009, when Watson came within an ace of winning aged 59, ultimately losing to Stewart Cink in a play-off.
