Watch: Phil Mickelson kept cool under pressure and finally captured his first Open Championship beating Henrik Stenson by 3 strokes on his 20th appearance at The Open.
Phil Mickelson became the oldest major winner in history by winning the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, less than four weeks before his 51st birthday.
He went into the event ranked 115th in the world, but eight years on from his fifth major – The Open at Muirfield – he produced a magnificent display to win by two.
His win at Muirfield came a week after he captured the Scottish Open. Mickelson might also have lifted the Claret Jug at Royal Troon in 2016, equalling the then-major record with his second round 63, before Henrik Stenson won an epic duel by three.
He was a runner-up at Royal St George's in 2011 and at the Masters in 2023 he fired a closing 65 to share second place.
Mickelson has three Masters victories and two PGA successes to his name, but at the US Open he has been second a record six times - most agonisingly in 2006 when he double-bogeyed the last hole to lose by one to Geoff Ogilvy.
America's most experienced Ryder Cup player with 12 caps, he has played in more than 100 majors and in 2018 became, at 47, the oldest winner of a World Golf Championships event.
