Plays in his first Open since 2016 thanks to a joint fourth-place finish in the recent Made in HimmerLand tournament in Denmark.

Three Hoylake spots were there to be taken as part of The Open Qualifying Series, but winner Rasmus Hojgaard and Warren’s fellow Scot Richie Ramsay, who came third, were already exempt.

The 42-year-old, who lifted the Doug Sanders world boys' title in 1994, was alongside Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell as part of the victorious 2001 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup side on American soil – he won both his singles matches – and turned professional the following year.

He then topped the Challenge Tour rankings in 2005 and has since claimed four DP World Tour crowns. Victory at the 2006 Scandinavian Masters helped him become the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year and he then added the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles the next season before partnering Colin Montgomerie to World Cup success.

Further titles have come in Denmark in 2014 and Austria three years ago. Warren also represented Britain and Ireland in the 2007 and 2013 Seve Trophy contests against Continental Europe.
