Henley gave easily the best performance of his ten visits to The Open when he finished fifth at Royal Troon last July.
Coming as it did a month after he was joint seventh at the US Open it took him to a career-high 12th on the world rankings and this March he made it into the top 10 for the first time by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, beating Collin Morikawa by one after a dramatic chip-in eagle at the 16th.
Previously, the American was joint leader after three rounds of the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines, but in the end had to settle for a share of 13th place.
That was his fifth PGA Tour success, but first since 2022. As an amateur he tied for 16th in the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach and was named America’s outstanding college player that year.
As well as earning a Walker Cup cap the following season – Jordan Spieth, Harris English and Patrick Cantlay were team-mates – he became only the second amateur to win a Nationwide Tour event.
Two years later he was the PGA Tour’s first debutant champion for 12 years with a victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii which included three rounds of 63.
His best major finish was tied fourth at the 2023 Masters and last year he was part of America’s winning Presidents Cup side in Canada, where he had two wins partnering world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and beat Sungjae Im in the singles.
