As the countdown continues to The 149th Open at Royal St George’s, Sir Nick Faldo remains the last Englishman to have secured the Claret Jug.
A three-time Champion Golfer of the Year, who won at Muirfield in 1987 and 1992 either side of his victory at St Andrews in 1990, Faldo is better placed than most to assess the challenge of golf’s original Championship.
He also finished as the runner-up at Royal St George’s in 1993 and produced a wonderful display at the same venue in 2003 to tie for eighth in the week he turned 46.
We sat down with Sir Nick to discuss a number of topics, including the unique challenges this week’s field will face at Sandwich, the leading English contenders for glory and how it feels to win The Open.
