The most detailed statistics in golf

ShotView powered by NTT DATA

Fans will be able to follow The 152nd Open at Royal Troon in unparalleled detail on TheOpen.com and The Open App, thanks to ShotView powered by NTT DATA.

The most complete statistical offering in golf, ShotView will provide an enhanced scoring experience through live ball positions and routes to hole for every stroke of the Championship, together with a wealth of data and insights on each player, group and the course.

As well as providing richly detailed course mapping and live scoring, ShotView also offers unique contextual statistics. Every shot from every player has a strokes-gained value, meaning we can display information such as the five best shots, statistically, from an individual player or the entire field.

Users can explore how the world’s best players navigate the unique challenge of Royal Troon, alongside live data on how each competitor compares to the field in a host of areas.

The many statistics captured within ShotView include driving distance and accuracy, the number of birdie chances each player has within various distance ranges, average proximity to the pin from different distances and the percentage of shots hit to certain spots from various yardages.

Approximately 152,000 raw shot datapoints will be collected across the four days of the Championship, with 60 trained scorers and 36 green cameras helping to deliver rapid information to The Open’s website and app.

Preparation for the Championship started in March with the initial course mapping. This is followed by a full course survey and scan, the capture of 8K high-res imagery and modelling of the key on-site structures to help create the most realistic user experience. Course colours are also captured in granular detail, allowing fans to see firmer and faster areas of Royal Troon where balls will be tough to stop.

Over 20GB of raw files are then compressed down to an average of 2.5MB per hole, ensuring ShotView loads as rapidly as possible for each user.

ShotView is just one example of how NTT DATA – an official Patron of The Open - has supported The R&A in transforming the digital fan experience at golf’s original Championship through the use of innovative and tailored technological solutions.

The NTT DATA Wall – a spectacular on-site presence at The Open since 2014 – will again provide fans at Royal Troon with a vast array of live data, shared on a giant screen in the spectator village.
