The Open

Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the Silver Medal at Muirfield in 2013

The Claret Jug may be the main trophy up for grabs at The Open, but another special prize is available to amateurs who compete in golf’s original Championship.

Since 1949, the Silver Medal has been awarded to the leading amateur finisher at The Open, provided they have completed all 72 holes.

The great Frank Stranahan claimed the Silver Medal in four of the first five years it was available, having also been the low amateur when he finished tied-second behind Fred Daly in 1947.

Other notable winners of the prize include Sir Michael Bonallack, Peter McEvoy, Hal Sutton, Jose Maria Olazabal, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick, while Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are the only players in history to have won both the Silver Medal and the Claret Jug.
