Puig played in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2018 and was the joint fourth best individual at the Eisenhower Trophy World Amateur Championship in Paris in 2022, one stroke ahead of Ludvig Aberg.

He was a student at Arizona State University at the time, but left there to join the LIV circuit, having previously played two of their events as an amateur.

He made his major debut at last season’s US Open and finished in a tie for 39th.

Puig claimed a remarkable victory at February’s IRS Prima Malaysian Open. The 22-year-old stood eight strokes off the pace at halfway, but with two closing rounds of 62 took the title by two.

It was his second victory on the Asian Tour, the first coming last October by a five-shot margin at the International Series Singapore.

“It’s a weird feeling for sure,” he said. “We almost missed the cut and the weekend was just insane man – 18 birdies, no bogeys.”

At the time it also earned him a place at Royal Troon as the event was part of The Open Qualifying Series offering three spots, but he subsequently made it into the Championship off the Federation Ranking list.
