Son of Mark Wiebe, twice a winner on the PGA Tour and conqueror of Bernhard Langer in a play-off for the 2013 Senior Open at Royal Birkdale, which gave him a place in the following year’s Open at Royal Liverpool.
A closing 66 in the Betfred British Masters at The Belfry on July 2 lifted Gunner from joint 31st spot into a tie for second with Oliver Wilson and also into The Open, three places being on offer as part of the Qualifying Series.
Wiebe spent time out of the game due to injury before qualifying for a DP World Tour card this season by progressing through all three stages of the qualifying school.
He went to The Belfry ranked 1,349th in the world, having missed the cut in 13 of his 15 tournaments this year. He was also 193rd on the Tour rankings, but after picking up a cheque for almost £250,000 improved to 63rd.
It was nearly 20 times his previous biggest earnings on the circuit.
