It came only three months after he was joint runner-up to Dean Burmester at the Investec South African Open, only his second start as a full member of the tour after coming through the Challenge Tour.
Svensson then tied for second again in February at the Bahrain Championship. After being 497th on the world rankings only last August he had risen to just outside the top 100 following his victory.
His Open debut was secured off this season’s Race to Dubai ranking on July 7, while he played the first major of his career at May’s PGA Championship, surviving the halfway cut and finishing joint 53rd.
On that he said: “A year ago I couldn’t have dreamt that I would be in my first major. My focus was just to get back on the Challenge Tour - the journey has been incredible.”
Svensson played college golf in North Carolina and represented Sweden in the 2017 and 2018 European World Amateur Team Championship.
