Although only three Royal Troon places were up for grabs, the 28-year-old’s tie for seventh was good enough since five of those ahead of him were already exempt. He also had a top-10 finish at March’s Players Championship.
McNealy played at Royal Birkdale in 2017 as the leading player on the World Amateur Golf Ranking at the end of the previous season, thus earning himself the Mark McCormack Award.
A first-team all-American and 2015 Walker Cup member, McNealy followed Tiger Woods in attending Stanford University and was named Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, one of only six golfers (including Woods and Phil Mickelson) to achieve the feat.
Also represented the United States at the 2016 World Team Championships and his 11 wins at Stanford tied the haul by Woods during his time there, while his closing 61 in the Pac-12 Championship matched another of Woods’s records.
He first led the amateur rankings for five weeks in 2015 and then regained top spot in June 2016.
McNealy's father Scott was a co-founder of Sun Microsystems.
