An Australian who grew up on a dairy farm and practiced by hitting balls from paddock to paddock, Stuart Appleby came within a whisker of Open glory at Muirfield in 2002.
A final round 65 saw Appleby fly into contention and he joined compatriot Steve Elkington, Thomas Levet and Ernie Els in the first – and so far only – four-man play-off in Open history.
The two Australians were eliminated after bogeying the last, leaving Els to defeat Levet in a sudden-death hole in scenes of high drama.
Appleby’s tie for second proved to be his best career finish in a major championship, though he won the PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2010 after becoming just the fifth player in history to shoot a 59 at an official PGA Tour event.
